WASHINGTON, Feb 4
A U.S. military aircraft is deporting migrants to India. A U.S. official, speaking anonymously, confirmed that a C-17 aircraft carrying migrants had departed for India and was expected to arrive within 24 hours. The administration has increasingly utilized military resources for immigration enforcement, including deploying additional troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, using military aircraft for deportations, and housing migrants on military bases.
The Pentagon has also initiated flights to deport over 5,000 immigrants held in El Paso, Texas, and San Diego, California. Previous military deportation flights have transported migrants to Guatemala, Peru, and Honduras. The use of military aircraft for deportations is considered a costly measure, with a recent flight to Guatemala estimated to have cost at least $4,675 per migrant.
