Nepalese Student’s Death Sparks Protests at KIIT University

Bhubaneswar: A 20-year-old engineering student from Nepal, pursuing BTech in Computer Science Engineering at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), was found dead in her hostel room. Preliminary investigations suggest the cause of death as suicide.

Following the incident, protests erupted on campus, with Nepalese students alleging university authorities failed to act despite the student contacting the International Relations office regarding harassment by batchmates. Over 500 Nepalese students were reportedly asked to leave campus, escalating concerns about safety and alleged police brutality during the protests.

Authorities have detained several batchmates for questioning and filed an FIR under sections related to suicide. A male student, reportedly in a relationship with the deceased, has also been taken into custody for questioning, with initial reports suggesting personal disputes may have contributed to the student’s distress. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination.

The situation led to diplomatic intervention, with Nepal’s Ambassador to India, Shankar Sharma, expressing satisfaction with the resolution and urging Nepalese students to return. KIIT University issued an apology and assured students of their safety, while the Odisha government suspended staff involved in mishandling the situation. A police officer has been stationed on campus to ensure security.

The Nepal government, initially critical of the situation, later expressed satisfaction with the measures taken by Indian authorities, urging students to resume their studies. Political parties in India also pressured the Odisha government for accountability and justice.

University and government officials have reiterated their commitment to justice and safety, emphasizing the long-standing cultural and educational ties between India and Nepal.
